KHAR: The political administration destroyed poppy in Barang tehsil of Bajaur Agency on Monday as tribal people agreed to cooperate with the authorities in destruction of the crop.

The decision about destruction of poppy was made after elders and growers of Barang tribe met with Additional Political Agent Tariq Khan in Targawoo area.

Scores of tribal elders from different area of Barang and senior officials of the local administration attended the meeting.

Speaking on the occasion, the elders showed concerns over shortage of health, education and other facilities in the region. They said that Barang was one of the most backward areas of the agency but the administration was ignoring it.

They asked the administration to start work on development schemes and release funds for mega development projects in the area pending for the last several years.

The elders also demanded of the authorities to start work on reconstruction of bridges, which had been destroyed by flood in 2011.

Speaking on the occasion, the additional political agent said that administration was committed to improve living standard of the people of Barang tribe by providing basic and modern civic facilities to them.

Later, the local administration with the help of tribal elders and farmers destroyed poppy crop, grown over 1,300 Kanals, in various areas of Brang tehsil.
