India's SC proposes Gavaskar as interim BCCI chief

NEW DELHI: India's Supreme Court recommended Thursday that batting legend Sunil Gavaskar takes over as interim president of the country's cricket board in place of the embattled incumbent N. Srinivasan.

A panel of judges also said the Chennai Super Kings and the Rajasthan Royals, the two teams at the centre of an ongoing probe into illegal betting and match-fixing, should be barred from the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) beginning next month.

“In the place of Srinivasan, we propose to appoint an experienced cricket player like Sunil Gavaskar to replace him and function as BCCI president,” Justice A.K. Patnaik said at a hearing in New Delhi.

“We are not removing anyone now, but Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will not be allowed to participate in the IPL which commences on April 16,” added Patnaik, who is head of the two-judge panel.

The proposals came two days after the same court urged Srinivasan to stand down as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to enable a “fair” investigation into allegations surrounding last year's IPL.

The bench is looking at a damning report it commissioned into wrongdoing in last year's edition of the annual Twenty20 tournament.

Released in February, the report concluded that Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan could be guilty of illegal betting on IPL games.

Srinivasan is regarded as the most powerful man in world cricket and is due to take over in July as head of the International Cricket Council.

He is an honest man. If he is in, many will be out. He will encourage cricket ties with Pakistan and IPL will have Pakistani players. They wont let him in. BCCI is no place for him.

@Ajeet: Pakistani players dont need IPL if they are able to keep beating Aus , India and Eng. Pakistani players will make their own destiny and are very popular. 2nd Its good to hear that Indian justice system is working and will ban the two teams involved in match fixing. IPL has no credibility with such fixing going and will turn on its head. People will not watch it if they know everything is fixed. May be people watch it because of Stars like Shahrukh etc but movies they can go and watch in the Cinemas.

I don't understand why Pakistanis are so sensitive about IPL and keep cribbing about it. Its a domestic cricket tournament of India.If BCCI does not want Pakistani players participating , then it's BCCI choice. Why does it cause constipation to Pakistanis? Should not they be trying to get their own domestic cricket more popular than IPL? Lets say even if there is fixing going on, how and why does it matter to Pakistanis? They should worry about their own fixers who have spent time in jails and now can be seen on TV shows. Get a life guys.

The real story is that India's Star TV channel is behind all this devious dirty work, and ESPNcric.info is in a battle with Star TV to win a case presently in the Indian Supreme court involving none other than Srinivasan. This BCCI/ ICI crook is a chamcha recipient of Star TV kickbacks and bribes. India shining indeed! Greed has no limit when it comes to the Mafia King of Indian cricket!

To all Indians who think we want our players to play in IPL - you are wrong. We don't want them to play in IPL. Our problem with IPL is that it has turned the great game of cricket into a mercenary money making machine diluting the essence of the game as evidenced by the lackluster performance of Windies against India last week. They were playing for their IPL bosses not for their country. Thats the problem! Pak team is doing just fine without IPL. As for Gavaskar being appointed chief of BCCI, its a good move as he is an honest and respected man who has dedicated his life to cricket. He will be incorruptible and will do good for the game.

WOAH calm down guys !! Why bring IPL in here?? Is IPL the only tournament ???It's a good move that SC of India has replaced with an honest and very DISCIPLINED guy!!But sadly it's only until IPL goes on!! As for the ties between the matches between two countries is concerned BCCI has no role in it!!SC of India has!! Every match between India and Pakistan in either of the countries has to be decided first by SC of India !!!!
