NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: Police on Friday produced two young girls, a Nikah registrar and three tribal elders before a judicial magistrate to seek their remand for investigation into the marriage of one of the girls against her freewill on an order passed by a jirga (tribal court).

The jirga, presided over by Rasool Bukhsh Ujjan on Thursday, had ordered that Seema Abro, 17, daughter of Ismail Abro, be wedded to Bakhshal Siyal, whose sister, Tanveer Siyal, 17, had fallen in love with Ms Seema’s brother, Sikarndar Abro, and left her home to contract a freewill marriage. The Nikah registrar was immediately called but the Tharoshah police intervened and arrested some of those involved in the whole affair.

Naushahro Feroze Judicial Magistrate Zaffar Laghari on Friday recorded statements of Tanveer Siyal, Seema Abro, Nikah registrar Maulvi Mohammad Essa Channa as well as three persons who attended the jirga proceedings, Ghulam Siyal, Qadir Siyal and Rajib Ali Chandio.

Ms Siyal said in her statement that she wanted to contract a freewill marriage with Sikander Abro while Ms Abro apparently could not muster up the courage to speak. Both girls were sent to Dar-ul-Aman.

The magistrate also gave five-day police remand of the Nikah registrar and the three suspects.
