ISLAMABAD: Police claimed to have arrested six suspects and seized a number of hand-grenades, explosives and weapons during a search operation here on Friday night.

The operation continued till late in the night as associates of the detained men were reportedly firing back on police.

According to police, the operation in Kural and Tarlai areas was launched on information that terrorists were planning to attack a sensitive installation and they had almost completed their preparation.

About 250 security personnel, including commandos, took part in the operation. They cordoned off the areas and diverted traffic to other roads.

During a door-to-door search, police said, they spotted some suspects, in a house, who opened fire and security personnel struck back.

The six suspects were arrested when they tried to escape from the house.

“Some militants are still in the house and continued firing,” a police officer told Dawn.

The arrested men told interrogators that some of their associates were hiding in another house in a nearby locality, the officer said, adding that security personnel had cordoned off the house but were facing stiff resistance from the suspects.
