LAHORE: Karachi-based artist Soraya Sikander put her 36 new artworks on exhibition at the Alhamra Art Gallery on Monday.

Saleema Hashmi, dean of the School of Visual Arts and Design, BNU, inaugurated the exhibition, titled “In, At and Around,” depicting a new approach to landscape paintings.

Ms Sikander studied at the Beaconhouse National University, Print Club London and Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London, where she created her most recognised sculpture ‘The Bride’ out of recycled material, largely fabric, wire, foam and plaster.

She paints landscapes interpretative of her immediate environment where dramatic lighting is conspicuous. A notable proportion of her work consists of oil on canvas paintings, watercolour on paper and charcoal on ink drawings. Paintings on display have a lot to offer in terms of multiplicity of thoughts and ideas.

Saleema Hashmi said, “Soraya Sikander’s works are not very conventional and strongly dependent on texture and colour.”

Ms Sikander has had nine exhibitions including those at the Dhaka Museum, Shilpaka Academy, Dhaka, the Unicorn Art Gallery, Karachi, Grand Trunk Road Art Gallery, Singapore, High Commission of Pakistan, UK, Royal Opera Arcade, London, the Slade School of Fine Art University College, London, and Karachi Arts Council.

The exhibition will remain open until Jan 25.
