PESHAWAR, Aug 26: The police department has registered cases against several of its officials for misuse of power and their involvement in corruption and criminal activities.

The action was initiated following directives of provincial government to clean the department and award punishment to police personnel involved in corruption, misuse of power, illegal confinement and negligence, a police spokesman said.

According to him, departmental action was initiated against a DSP, two SHOs, two sub-inspectors, one ASI, three head constables and three constables during the last three days.

He said that cases were registered against ASI Sajid and constables Amjad and Bashir Khan of Gulbahar police station. All the three policemen were arrested and their suspension orders were issued.

Similarly, sub-inspector Sajjad Khan of Nasir Bagh police station was suspended and summoned to police lines over misusing official powers for private business.

Sub-inspector Ali Hassan and constable Ikram of Sarband police station were also arrested for entering into a deal with a narcotics smuggler and not arresting him.

They were caught red-handed by a police officer when they were finalising the deal with the accused, the spokesman said. Police not only registered a case and arrested them but also suspended them, he added.

Also, Nasir Bagh SHO Sazwali was issued a letter of discontent over dereliction of duty while his circle officer was issued a letter of advice.

Sarband SHO Rehmatullah was charge-sheeted on account of negligence in duty and failing to control his subordinates.

Town police station moharrar ASI Tehsinullah, Faqirabad police station moharrar head constable Israr Khan and Hayatabad police station clerk Zakirullah were summoned to police lines over absence from duty.

The spokesman said that SP Mohammad Hussain, SP Mohammad Ismail, ASP Umar and ASP Bilal were nominated to hold departmental inquiries against those officials.
