LAHORE, Aug 14: Torrential rain in Lahore on Wednesday disrupted life and somewhat dampened the Independence Day celebrations.

But still a number of Lahorites spilled over the city roads in the evening to celebrate the event in a befitting manner.

Rain that began early in the morning stopped at 10am. It again began at around noon and lasted till 5pm. But by that time, the city streets and roads had turned into streams and parks into ponds.

The rain was heaviest so far in the current monsoon season. The Met office recorded 171mm of rain at its Jail Road office and 133mm at the airport from 8am to 5pm.

The highest ever 24-hour rain was recorded in the city on July 31, 1980 that was 270mm.

The Met office expected more rain in the city in the next 24 hours.

The worst-hit areas included Lakshmi Chowk, Misri Shah, Samanabad, Walled City’s Circular Road, some localities of Gulberg and Mohni Road.

Rainwater was however cleared from many localities by the evening.

Weather otherwise remained pleasant.
