KARACHI, Aug 14: A boy was killed and 58 others were wounded in celebratory firing in different parts of the city on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday to commemorate the country’s 67th Independence Day, officials said.

“We received 33 persons including children and women with bullet wounds…a boy died during treatment,” said Dr Seemin Jamali, the head of the emergency ward of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

She added that five wounded persons were admitted for treatment, while others were discharged after being given first aid.

Dr Jamali recalled that 23 people with bullet wounds were also brought to the JPMC on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The victim boy was killed in the Landhi area, police said.

Landhi SHO Izhar Lahori said that some youths were firing into the air in Landhi-5 ½ on Tuesday night and their bullets hit Subhan Abid, 10, and Nabeel, 24. The wounded were taken to the JPMC where doctors declared Subhan dead.

The SHO claimed that one of the suspects, Wajahat, 18, was arrested in the locality and the police recovered a weapon from him. A murder case was also registered against him, said the area SHO.

“We received 19 persons, including nine female victims, with bullet injuries in different areas of the city,” said additional Police Surgeon of the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Dr Abdul Haq Bhutto.

He said an octogenarian woman was also among the wounded. All of them had been discharged after initial treatment.

Similarly, seven people with gunshot wounds were brought to the Civil Hospital Karachi for treatment.

Dr Ali Raza, a medico-legal officer at the health facility, told Dawn that one of the wounded was in a critical condition and was referred to the surgical ward.

Meanwhile, the Boat Basin police claimed to have arrested three persons along with weapons for firing into the air in Clifton. They were identified as Nazarul Islam, Yusuf and Shahzor.
