For millions of Muslims, the holy month of Ramadan is time to pray and fast from dawn to dusk. And for this group of Muslim Rohingyas, they're doing it from behind the bars of a detention center.

Trying to escape a bloody conflict in their home of Myanmar earlier this year, they set sail hoping to reach another Muslim country, but ended up here and are being held in a detention center in Thailand.

The some 800,000 Rohingya of Myanmar are not recognized as citizens and are not allowed education or employment. The U.N. has called them 'virtually friendless'.

Except perhaps for some volunteers who help prepare Iftar for the detainees.

(Soundbite) (Thai) Jamrieng Anansuk, 48 year old local resident saying:

"I'm helping them in the name of being religious and for the Muslim people. They have nowhere to go and if they don't have this food, they'll be even more in trouble."

According to Thai officials there are an esimated 2,000 Rohingyas detained in centers across Thailand.
