After taking over as the Chief Executive of Pakistan on Oct 12, 1999, Gen Pervez Musharraf took the responsibility of steering Pakistan clear from the brink of economic and societal disaster.
His top most priority at that time was to establish good governance along with fiscal and economic discipline.
He replaced institutional heads with professionals of high credence. One of his closest associates was assigned the task to develop a system for local governance who devised a meticulous system having endless possibilities for communal development.
The ministry of trade and commerce flourished under Musharraf’s able guidance.
Financial discipline was brought about by one of his key aides who later became prime minister and represented Pakistan at many economic forums.
A renowned scientist was invited to lead the ministry of Science and Technology.
An educationist from the province of Balochistan was handpicked to establish her credence at national and later at the international level under his able leadership.
His other team members and close associates also played a pivotal role in making governance a success and make him stand out as a true leader.
Later, Musharraf provided full support to the democratic governments at national and local levels and ensure the establishment of democratic norms.
After the establishment of good governance standards, he started working towards the development of a soft image of Pakistan.
He established cultural academies to further his vision of a cultured and civilised Pakistan.
It was his capabilities that played a pivotal role in the establishment of regional stability and development of international relations between Pakistan and other states.
His era was ultimately a true reflection of his rich cultured personality.

What good is the democracy when it can not ensure the rule of law. Each of the socalled "democratically elected" government turned out to be more corrupt than its predessor. Look at the most recent government . .... that came to power simply by exploiting sympathies of general public, and what did people receive from it ..... lack of security of public, increased corruption, and the ever increasing inflation.

Pakistan did well under dictators because the dictators had cooperated with the US. During those dictatorial regimes Pakistan's economy was supported by massive infusion of American dollars. Each of those dictators including Musharraf had bartered the country's sovereignty for the American assistance. The Pakistani economy and foreign policy were determined by Washington.

Malik saheb, which constitutional-elected government are you talking about? Z A Bhutto's ? He came into power by refusing the majority decision and was also the chief martial law officer himself for a almost a year, or Benazir Bhutto's, who could not get the majority without the help of LOTAS or Nawaz Shariff ? I hope you must have read the SC judgement on Asgher Khan's case. All these so called leaders have done nothing but taken the country to bankruptcy. And by the way Musharraf took over from Nawaz Sharriff who himself was the creation of General Zia ul Haque.

Not necessary. IMF lent to Pakistan based on the performance of its economy during Musharraf's era. This was confirmed by the treasury and article was published by dawn. The stock-exchange was at the level were it is now and when the democratic government took over it plunged below 5000 point. These facts speak for themselves.

Mushrraf Shaib is the most sincere and true leader we,ve had in the recent past. I don't think any of the charges against him hold any water. All his great deeds have been somehow distorted and made to look evil by the corrupt politicians who were held accountable by him for their wrong doings.

I am glad to see someone is giving credit to PM for the golden era we have seen in his time. I don't understand how ignorant can we be by ignoring and not acknowledging PM's great work.
We have been rightly put under the current, corrupt leader. We truly deserve what we are getting today.
It is highly shameful to treat a hero in a manner we do. If not anything else, at least respect him as an army man, a soldier he was.
Having said that, this article is poorly written. Author hasn't giving any stats or data to prove his/her point. It is more like an essay written by a 2nd grader. "Why I like Musharraf?"

Pakistan is gone back 30 years in the name of democracy. People deserve what they have now, We are basically bank corrupt. What I have seen in Pakistan, the person who is honest with the nation always hated by the peoples. We love only corrupt people who plunder the country. These politicians lives in places and most of the people do not have basic means of life to live.

Although true, this is quite vague in terms, would appreciate if figures & statistics and names are given & comparison with the democratic govt, indepth analysis is required so the masses would understand & appreciate PM era.

All of our military leaders, probably except Yahya Khan' were honest and protector of Pakistan who served the country well. Most of our economic and civil progress were made during military rules. Ayub era were the golden years. Mushrraf protected Pakistan from the two rotten dynatic politicians. Zia protected Pakistan from the arrogant, kidnapper and killer Bhutto and the Russian threat.

Suffice to say Ms. Mumtaz, it was verily a 'golden age' he led this nation through all because he is intellectually wise, honest and patriotic to the core. Bottom-line; these qualities are essential for anyone aspiring to lead us and i don't find any of it in the so-called indigenous breed of 'democrat' plunderers who we owe the credit to our cultural, moral and economic bankruptcy.

I am not prejudiced but every time a new democratic govt took over in the 90's, they have driven the economy to near bankruptcy through mismanagement and corruption. When uneducated and zero experienced ministers are asked to lead the govts, they invariably fail to lead and the result is chaos, and failure in education, health, energy, finance- you name it.
I am all for democracy but politcians so far are unable to do the job they are elected for. Liberal dictatorships do a better job because they empower talented professionals to run the State business. That is the dilemma of this unfortunate country. The failure of politicians to lead as they are totally unfit for that role. THey want those positions for the power, the glamor and the money. Not to serve the people.
What about the poor people of Pakistan? Who is going to look after them?

Because it was handed over to him by the establishment. He couldn't have planned a coup when his plane was in air and was not allowed to land in Pakistan and was directed to go to India. The silent majority which supported his take over is still silent and opportunists who supported him at that time are after his life now as they have found new masters.

i am amazed at the mediocrity and amnesia of people supporting him who made a mockery of rule of Law.who could forget 12th May,2007 when his goons in karachi played with the life of innocent people and he took pride in that savagery.The worst of democrats are better than this dictator.people are supporting him shares his ruthlessness and should be tried along with his him.

Lets also not forget that he gave independence to media. No so called democratic government ever allowed independent media. No so called democratic government held local bodies election. It is a shame that the only sincere leader we found is being tried in courts. This should be a verdict on those who are against him. Now we know who is sincere to Pakistan and who is an enemy of Pakistan.

and who says that democracy is the only legit way to lead the Nation, People really don't care, any system that can deliver for the Nation, Suitable for it own people, socially and economically., I agree India is the largest democracy but who care good for you if you think its delivering to you however Capitalism is rotting your roots too.
