THIS refers to the review ‘A critical edition of a classic’ (June 2, Books & Authors) by Raza Rumi. While the review is pertinent and discusses the book Mahasin-i-Kalam-i-Ghalib in detail, the couplet from Ghalib, quoted and adapted from Frances Pritchett’s translation, is rather incorrect, defeating the very idea that Ghalib forwarded in this couplet.

The reviewer has used the expression ‘tez ro’ in the first part of the couplet, whereas it is actually ‘rah ro’, which means ‘one who moves with you’, while the earlier expression means ‘swift mover’.

Clearly, something has changed since for this step to have been taken and there are shifts in the balance of power within.
