PESHAWAR, March 25: Chief of his own faction of Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam Maulana Fazlur Rehman has warned that hasty decision will have serious consequences for the government if supply of goods to Nato forces in Afghanistan is restored without a consensus resolution of the parliament.
“We will block all routes if government permits resumption of Nato supplies,” he told a rally of party workers here on Sunday. He said that unseen forces had settled all important issues with America when Parliamentary Committee on National Security was in session.
“Major issues with America have already been decided. Now they have been passing the buck to parliament,” he said. He added that parliament had already passed two joint resolutions and All Parties Conference also approved some recommendations.
Unfortunately the resolutions and recommendations had been put into cold storage, Mr Rehman said, adding his party would not accept a resolution if it was passed from the parliament with majority.
The rally titled “Islam Zindabad Conference” was held near Peshawar-Islamabad Motorway. A portion of the Ring Road was closed to traffic owing to security reasons.
Around 5,000 baton wielding volunteers of the party and anti-terrorism squad of police were deployed on the venue while roads were blocked with barbed wire. The organisers had claimed that over one million people would attend the rally.
However, despite extensive campaign and arrangements the show was not impressive although JUI has considerable street power in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tribal areas. The workers and seminary students affiliated with JUI were brought from all 25 districts of the province and Fata.
Mr Rehman said that some powers were trying to sabotage reconciliation process in Afghanistan by sending fresh consignments of weapons to the war-torn country.
“Afghan government is ready for talks with Taliban. US President Barack Obama has stated that Taliban are not terrorists and started peace talks with them in Qatar. Then why containers loaded with weapons are transported to Afghanistan via Pakistan,” he questioned.
The JUI chief said that head of Afghanistan’s High Peace Council Sibghatullah Mujadidi had told him that Afghan government had declared Taliban as opposition and they were not terrorists.
He said that major stakeholders had admitted that there was no military solution to the Afghan issue. “Weapons are dispatched when Afghanistan is heading towards reconciliation,” he said.
Mr Rehman came down heavily on establishment for creating hurdles for his party. “Don’t create hurdles for us otherwise you (establishment) will be responsible for the repercussions,” he warned.
He said that the country could not become welfare state because of traditional politicians and establishment. Pakistan did not have foreign policy and every government had to import foreign policy, he alleged.
The JUI chief said that health and education sectors were ignored and army was getting loin’s share in the budget as a result masses could not see economic prosperity.
He said that Pakistan had neither economic policy nor foreign policy that was why the country had been dependent on America and foreign donor agencies since its creation. He termed financial mismanagement root cause of the corruption in society and said that peasants, labourers, low rank employees and industrial workers were being exploited.
Me Rehman said that assemblies were dissolved and elected governments were dismissed despite that corruption and mismanagement had not been eradicated. He said that politicians were blaming each other for corruption and establishment took advantage of the situation.
Without naming Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf, the JUI chief said that Jewish lobby was very active to bring its agents into power. He said that western culture was being promoted in the society.
A resolution was passed on the occasion, asking the government not to resume supplies to Nato forces in Afghanistan.
