University demanded

PESHAWAR, March 8: Leader of Pakistan Muslim League-N and former provincial minister Farid Toofan has asked the provincial government to announce a university for Karak district.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday, the Mr Toofan said that Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan might visit Karak next week to announce a Kohat University campus there, but it would not be acceptable to the people.

“The CM should announce a separate university for the district otherwise the people are planning to disrupt his public meeting by holding protest demonstrations,” he warned and added that the elders of the district would hold a meeting on March 10 to decide their future line of action.

He said that in case of any law and order situation in Karak the entire responsibility would rest with the provincial government. — Bureau Report

Student run over by bus

MARDAN, March 8: A grade-10 student riding a motorcycle was killed when he was hit by a bus of Abdul Wali Khan University at Mangal Bagh chowk here on Thursday.

Eyewitnesses told this correspondent that the slain youth identified as Naeem was crossing the chowk on his bike when the speeding bus hit his motorcycle killing him on the spot.

Police officials have taken the bus into custody and registered a case against the driver, Hazrat Bilal.

Meanwhile, local traders staged a protest demonstration here on Thursday against desecration of Holy Quran by US forces in Afghanistan and termed it a pre-planned action by the ‘infidel’ countries to harm the feelings of Muslims.

The traders blocked the road for traffic by burning tyres and also chanted slogans against the US and Pakistani governments. — Correspondent

Transvestites stage protest

MARDAN, March 8: Transvestites took to street against highhandedness of police officials here on Thursday and demanded of the high-ups concerned to take stern action against the responsible personnel.

Hundreds of transvestites hailing from Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi and Nowshehra districts carried out a protest rally against the police personnel of Mardan city.

The rally after passing through various bazaars turned into a huge public gathering in front of the Mardan Press Club.

The provincial president of transvestites, Farzana, and other key members including Reshma and Nishath while addressing on the occasion alleged that the policemen in Mardan city not only snatched money from them but also manhandled them in the name of security checking. — Correspondent

Hashish seized

PESHAWAR, March 8: The capital city police here on Thursday foiled a bid to smuggle 72kg hashish and arrested an accused.

On receiving a tip-off, CCPO Imtiaz Altaf formed a raiding squad under the supervision of SSP operation Tahir Ayub which established checkposts on suspected entry points.

During checking, Chamkani police signalled a suspicious car (LXG-2703) to stop and recovered 72kg hashish from its secret cavities.

The smuggler, Fazal Mullah, of Landi Akhunabad was also arrested.

In other raids in Gharbi, Urmer, Mathra and Badabher police arrested proclaimed offenders including Jibraan, Zahir Shah, Ikramullah, Ehsanullah, Amnullah, Umar Khan, Anwar, Amir and Sarwar, who were involved in different heinous nature crimes. — APP

Four killed in Charsadda

CHARSADDA, March 8: Four people were killed in different incidents here the other day.

One Lalzada told Rajar police that he and his brother Amirzada were standing at Jindey bazaar in Tangi area when accused Anis opened fire and killed his brother on the spot.

The accused later shot his wife dead to justify killing of Amirzada as an honour-related case, he said. The police have started search for the accused.

In Utmanzai, one Darwesh shot his brother Kamal dead after exchange of hot words. The police registered an FIR on the complaint of wife of the deceased and have started investigation.

In another incident, one Abdullah reportedly committed suicide by shooting himself dead after exchange of hot words with his brother in Rajar area.
