Tribesman gunned down

GHALANAI, Feb 28: A tribesman was gunned by his rival over an old enmity in Ekkghund bazaar here on Tuesday.

Locals said Shamsur Rehman opened fire on Hassan Khan of Pandyali tehsil at Ekkaghund bazaar. As a result he was critically injured and later succumbed to his injuries. The accused later surrendered to the political administration.

Locals said about two months ago Hassan Khan had killed father of Shamsur Rehman.

Meanwhile, the local ulema and students of Jamia Azizia Mehmoodia, Chanda bazaar on Tuesday held a protest to condemn burning of copies of Holy Quran by Nato troops in Afghanistan.

The protesters were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-US slogans. They demanded of the UN to take notice of the incident. The protesters also burnt effigy of the US president. —Correspondent  

B-tech engineers protest

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: B-tech engineers on Tuesday held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road against the government for not giving them status of BE engineers.

Holding banners and placards inscribed with their demands they also shouted slogans for solution to their problems.

They demanded that the government implement the decision of court for equalising the B-tech (Hons) to BE Engineering and called for provision of maximum opportunities for B-tech graduates.

The protesters were led by B-Tech Engineers Association, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chairman Wajid Ali Yousafzai.

Talking to reporters Mr Yousufzai said the establishment of a technical university was the dire need of hour in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding the funds and land for the purpose had already been allocated. —Bureau Report

Demo against Nato

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: The activists of Pasban on Tuesday held a protest demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road against the desecration of Holy Quran by Nato forces in Afghanistan and asked the Muslims to take a unified stand on the issue so that such ugly incidents did not recur in future.

The demonstrators were holding banners and placards inscribed with anti-US slogans. Also chanting slogans against Nato forces, the protesters burnt tryes on the road disrupting vehicular traffic.

The demonstrators, led by Arshad Angar, provincial president of PSW, said the US-led forces in Afghanistan proved to be worst enemies of Islam as they repeatedly committed desecration of Quran, hurting sentiments of Muslims. —Bureau Report

Road reconstruction

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti has approved the reconstruction of Chitral-Booni Road, setting aside Rs9.95 million. The road was damaged due to floods during 2010, and traffic was restored on emergency basis on a diversion road.

According to a statement issued here on Tuesday, the road was not included in the work plan of flood restoration phase-I. It was to be included in the work plan of phase-II after feasibility study and proper design. Unfortunately, due to financial crunch the implementation of phase-II could not be matured.

The C&W division Chitral had submitted PC-I of the road to the competent authority, after which the chief minister approved the scheme.

With the completion of the under construction suspension bridge at Mastuj, Chitral will also be linked with the Chinese market through this road. —Bureau Report

Polio drops significance

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: Parents have been urged to get their children vaccinated against polio in upcoming three-day anti-polio drive in the province.

Addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday, Mualana Jehanzeb Zahid, a member of National Research Development Foundation (NRDF), Dr Inam, a representative of Unicef, and Mian Shahab, field coordinator NRDF, said the ulema had highlighted significance of polio drops and played important role in removing misperceptions about polio drops during special sermons and meetings with parents at different union councils in Peshawar.

They said about 20 per cent refusal cases had been addressed with the support of ulema during last campaign in district Peshawar. —Bureau Report  

Official ‘involved’ in corruption

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: Health workers, belonging to Mohmand Agency, have demanded action against the field supervisor medical officer (FSMO) for allegedly transferring several paramedics to hide his alleged corruption.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Tuesday paramedical association, Mohmand Agency, president Tahir Jan Mohmand alleged the FSMO Dr Wazir was involved in massive corruption and demanded his removal.

Mr Tahir Jan also accused Dr Wazir of being involved in making illegal transfer of paramedics for his personal gains.

Flanked by other paramedics, he said they had also highlighted growing corruption in special campaigns against polio and measles in the agency, but no action was taken against the relevant officials. He said the FMSO had appointed his wife as midwife on a fake certificate getting illegal salary from the department.—Bureau Report  

Security situation reviewed

PESHAWAR, Feb 28: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Masood Kausar, Chief Minister Ameer Haider Hoti and Corps Commander, Peshawar, Let-Gen Khalid Rabbani reviewed on Tuesday security situation in the backdrop of the fresh wave of terrorism in the province.

According to a press release issued after the meeting, the participants of the meeting were unanimous on continuing the efforts for ensuring complete peace and normalcy in the province. Chaired by the governor, the meeting expressed deep sympathies with members of the bereaved families and paid rich tributes to those who died in the incidents.

The governor said motorcycle bomb attack at Nowshera on Monday, where the chief minister had earlier addressed a public meeting, bombing at a bus stand and targeting of a police station clearly showed that the terrorists had become frustrated. —Bureau Report

Man commits suicide

KARAK, Feb 28: A young man committed suicide over a domestic issue here on Tuesday.

Police said Umer Fayaz, a resident of Ghundi Mir Khankhel, committed suicide by shooting himself with a pistol. The relatives of the deceased registered FIR of the incident in Sabirabad police station. —Correspondent
