Man killed in Nowshera

NOWSHERA, Nov 2: A man was killed and his wife seriously injured when some attackers opened fire on them in their house at Khawre village in Akora Khattak on Wednesday.

The injured woman, Batool Baha, told the Akora Khattak police she along with her husband Munaft Khan Khattak and four children was home when their enemies forcibly entered the house and started indiscriminate fire on them. As a result, she said Munaft Khan died and she was injured.

She nominated Maqsood Labraiz and Sarferosh Khan, sons of Ihtraf Gul, in the FIR registered at the Akora Khattak police station. —Correspondent

Water supply scheme

MANSEHRA, Nov 2: PML-N MNA Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar on Wednesday inaugurated work on a water supply scheme in Oghi tehsil, which would cost Rs3 million.

Speaking on the occasion, he said his party was struggling to provide basic facilities of life to the people living in remote and backward areas.

He claimed time was not far when the PML-N would establish its government in the centre and the four provinces to end sense of ‘deprivation’ among the people. Mr Safdar said the PML-N had promised to build the water supply during the by-election in NA-21 constituency, last year. —Correspondent

Letter writing competition

KOHAT, Nov 2: Eight students of the Fauji Foundation School excelled in the 40th national annual letter writing competition.

The Pakistan Post on Wednesday declared the results and distributed prizes among the best performing students at a function held in the Fauji Foundation School here.

The divisional superintendent of postal services Kohat said that 2,800 letters of students from 67 schools were selected by the committee and 2,030 letters were included in the final competition.

In overall competitions, Ms Urwa of Liberty High School, Faisalabad got first position while Hina of Al-Munbaz Academy Girls High School, Abbottabad and Doriah Raees of Beaconhouse School System, Karachi, stood second and third position, respectively. Cash prizes of Rs50,000, Rs30,000 and Rs20,000, have been announced for them, respectively. —Correspondent

Nationalists hold demo

PESHAWAR, Nov 2: As part of the movement ‘occupy wall street’ the nationalists in Peshawar also held a demonstration at Sher Shah Suri Road to urge the masses to raise voice against imperialism.

The protesters were led by Awami Party Pakistan leaders, including Fanoor Gujar and Shahab Khattak advocate, who were holding placards and banners against the capitalism and termed it dangerous for the people of the under-developed countries.

Mazdoor Kisan Party leaders Afzal Khamoosh, Eng Haider Zaman, Hussain Taj and Nisarullah Awan also spoke.

Mr Gujar said multi-national companies had gripped the economy of ‘our’ country and had occupied about 84 per cent resources of the world, adding 13 richest people of the world could buy 43 under-developed countries. —Bureau Report

Children given anti-polio drops

TIMERGARA, Nov 2: The executive district magistrate, Lower Dir, Noor Wali Khan Wazir on Wednesday administered oral polio drops to children of Khangay Patay and Ghaurgo villages in Rabat Darra whose parents had been refusing vaccination of their children, official sources and residents told Dawn.

Sources said more than 20 children in these two villages could get anti-polio drops during the last national campaign.

Noor Wali Khan along with polio focal person tehsildar Khall, an ANP local leader and journalists visited the area and called the parents to Khall police station. He convinced the parents and administered anti-polio drops to four children.

Later, on the demand of parents, the district administration sent special teams from Timergara to Ghaurgo village where 16 other children were administered anti-polio vaccines. —Correspondent

Nadra team sent to Khyber

PESHAWAR, Nov 2: The National Database Registration Authority has deployed staff in parts of Tirah valley of Khyber Agency to facilitate the people in their registration.A statement issued here said the GM Nadra, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Col Ahmed Khattak on Wednesday visited the tribal area and met elders of the Zakha Khel tribe.

It was stated the visit of Nadra head was aimed at evaluating the registration process and monitoring progress of the staff in the areas.

He discussed such issues with the tribal elders, listened to their suggestions and assured them of solution to all the problems.

Mr Khattak said female staff had also been sent to the area to facilitate the women. —Bureau Report

JI’s Lakki Shura takes oath

LAKKI MARWAT, Nov 2: The newly-elected members of Jamaat-i-Islami district Shura took oath of their offices on Wednesday.

District amir Maulana Malik Meer Shah administered oath to Abdul Ghaffar Faryadi, Matiullah, Abdul Samad Khan, Saifur Rehman, Mazullah, Anwar Hayat Khan and Azizullah in a ceremony held at Hayat town near Naurang. A large number of Jamaat activists attended the ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion Malik Meer Shah said the JI would continue peaceful struggle for bringing revolution in the country. —Correspondent

Making police effective

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Nov 2: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa IGP Mohammad Akbar Khan Hoti has said police are committed to combating crimes and unlawful activities.

Addressing a police darbar at Circuit House here on Wednesday, Mr Hoti said all resources would be utilised to improve policing in the province.

The IGP said that sacrifices rendered by police and other law enforcement agencies would not go waste. He said state of the art vehicles were being purchased to make the police force more effective in the fight against militancy.

The ceremony was largely attended by the elders of the area, representatives of local bar association, traders community and members of civil society. —Correspondent

School construction

KOHAT, Nov 2: Provincial Minister for Revenue Eng Syed Qalb-i-Hassan on Wednesday announced construction of a girls high school in Merozai area, which will cost over Rs9.

Addressing a function in the area he promised that if the local people gave three kanals of land the government would also construct a high school for boys. He said education was panacea for all the ills in the society.He said to control unemployment the provincial government had given 110 kanals land to the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and 20 kanals to the Allama Iqbal Open University.

He recalled that he had spent Rs20 million on the construction of streets, a bridge and other projects. —Correspondent
