Ban on cattle supply to Fata

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has banned the transportation of livestock and meat to the tribal areas for an indefinite period and cancelled all the permits.

The decision was taken at a high level meeting held here on Wednesday with Chief Secretary Ghulam Dastagir in the chair. Provincial ministers Mian Iftikhar Hussain and Haji Hidayatullah were also present on the occasion.

A statement issued here on Wednesday said that the decision was taken by the government in response to a call attention notice in the provincial assembly.

Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that a high level committee headed by provincial home secretary had been formed to devise strategy to control cattle smuggling. —Bureau Report

Cash, jewellery looted

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: Four unidentified gunmen broke into a house at Shaheen Muslim Town in Pando area and decamped with jewellery and cash worth over Rs3 million here on Wednesday, police said.

A police official quoting the statement of the complainant, Amjad, said that four men armed with pistols forcefully entered his house at 2pm, held his family hostage and took away 50 tolas of gold jewellery, Rs0.4 million cash, two digital cameras, one pistol and cellphone sets etc.

The complainant, who is an employee in Peshawar Electric Supply Company, informed the police that he could recognise the accused in identification parade as they were not wearing masks. The official said that efforts were made to arrest the accused. —Bureau Report

Man kills sister

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: A teenaged girl was shot dead allegedly by her brother over a petty issue in Bakhshi Pul area here on Wednesday, police said.

An official of the Khazana Police Station said that Farman opened fire at his 14-year-old sister, Uzma Bibi, after exchanging hot words with his family members over a domestic issue. The girl, he said, was shifted to a local hospital but she succumbed to her wounds. A murder case was registered at Khazana Police Station against the accused, who managed to escape.

Meanwhile, Ashraf Khan, working as a security guard at a private office, was electrocuted at his residence in Chitralli Mohalla in Nasir Bagh area while he was repairing an electric wire. —Bureau Report

PML-N differences

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: Woman MNA of Pakistan Muslim League-N Dr Imtiaz Sultan Bukhari has expressed grave concern over the internal differences in the party.

The lawmaker in a statement here on Wednesday said that the differences had surfaced due to nomination of junior people as office-bearers on important party seats.

She said that the country was facing serious crises and it was need of the hour to remove all the differences and join hands with the party leader, Nawaz Sharif, for solution of the problems.

The lawmaker asked the party workers to shun their internal differences, accommodate each others and strengthen the party at all levels across the country. —Bureau Report

Protest against NGOs

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: The activists of various civil society organisations, lawyers, students and teachers of Peshawar University on Wednesday held a rally near the Peshawar Press Club against some non-governmental organisations for what they said unnecessary interference in affairs of the university.

The protesters led by Prof A.Z. Hilali were holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for end to meddling in the affairs of Peshawar University and shouted slogans against the NGOs who had demanded replacement of Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Azmat Hayat Khan.

The protesters also issued a detailed statement which read that some of the university teachers were trying to defame the vice-chancellor for taking action against certain teachers.

They also demanded rechecking of the thesis of those who had obtained PhD and M Pill degrees. —Bureau Report

Volleyball tournament

PESHAWAR, Sept 21: The first Mian Rashid Hussain Memorial Volleyball Tournament will begin at the gymnasium of Pakistan Sports Board from October 1.

The tournament being organised by Malik Saad Memorial Sports Trust would continue for three days in which four under-16 teams would participate, said a press release issued here on Wednesday.

Volleyball teams of Chamkani and Tehkal and two teams of Provincial Volleyball Association will take part in the tournament, which will be inaugurated by provincial sports minister Syed Aqil Shah. —Bureau Report
