KARACHI, Sept 2: Five people, including a policeman, a naval officer, and an activist of the Pakistan People's Party, were killed in different areas during the first two Eid holidays, while no murder was reported in the city on Friday, police said.

In New Karachi, a lieutenant commander of Pakistan Navy and a civilian were shot dead shortly after Eid prayers, the police said.

“Lt Commander Nasir Nafees, 50, and Tariq Iqbal were walking home after offering Eid prayers at a mosque when armed men riding a motorbike opened fire on them in Sector 11-B,” said a duty officer of the Sir Syed Town police station.

He said the riders managed to flee.

The bodies were shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination, he added.

“Their target is not yet clear though it seems that only one of the two persons was the actual target while the other fell prey to the firing,” said SP Abdul Salam Shaikh.

The naval officer, posted at the dockyard, had come over to his parent's house in the neighbourhood to celebrate Eid with them, the police said.

They added that Tariq had been a councillor or a nazim.

The SP said both the victims having different backgrounds were not linked to each other. He also ruled out the possibilities of a sectarian killing or an armed robbery incident.

He said the naval authorities also were looking into the background of the slain naval officer to ascertain the motive behind the killing. Some four to five years back, the naval officer had been abducted for some reason but it was not a kidnap for ransom case, according to another senior officer.

In the Steel Town area, a policeman was shot dead and his associate wounded when they attempted to question two suspicious-looking motorbike riders on Wednesday.

ASI Shabir Solangi and Constable Khalid Mehmood had been posted near an automated teller machine of a private bank in Phase I of Gulshan-i-Hadeed which was frequented by people in large numbers on the occasion of Eid, said a duty officer at the Steel Town police station.

He said two motorbike riders stopped close to the machine and stood there pretending that they were waiting for someone. As ASI Solangi walked up to the suspects for questioning, they fired at him and also shot at the constable who followed, he said.He added that the armed riders managed to flee.

“The ASI suffered a bullet wound in the chest and died on the spot and the police constable survived with a gunshot wound in his leg.”

The police have registered a case (FIR 245/2011) under Sections 353, (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery), 302 (premeditated murder) and 34 (with common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

The body of a young girl with marks of strangulation on her neck was found at a farmhouse within the remit of the Gulshan-i-Maymar police station on Thursday morning.

Three youngsters had acquired a unit (No 22) in the farmhouse without proper booking by paying Rs2,000 to its watchman, Allah Dino, said Sohrab Goth DSP Iftikhar Lodhi.

He said the three young men and a girl had arrived at the farmhouse in the early hours of Thursday.

“The men left the unit in the morning, telling the watchman that they were going to fetch something for breakfast. After some time when they did not return, the watchman looked inside and found the girl dead.”

Quoting hospital officials, he said the girl had been raped.

The DSP said the farmhouse owner was not aware of the watchman's actions.

The police shifted the body to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

In Orangi Town, a PPP activist was gunned down at his shop on Thursday, police said.

They added that the owner of Adnan Communication Shop, Mohammad Rashid, son of Mohammad Bashir, was sitting at his shop in Sector 9 of Orangi Town where two suspects riding a motorbike arrived. They had a little conversation, which turned into an altercation. Finally, the suspects fired at Rashid and fled, the police said.

The killing appeared to be a result of some personal enmity, the police added.
