No outages at Sehr, Iftar

PESHAWAR, Aug 1: There will be no loadshedding during Sehr and Iftar in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

A Pesco spokesman in a statement on Monday said if the consumers cooperated by using minimum power the power supply would continue without any interruption.

“The consumers are also requested to avoid ACs during Sehr and Iftar so the system doesn’t get overloaded,” he said. Pesco chief executive also asked the consumers to extend cooperation so the power company could overcome the energy crisis.

The domestic consumers, he suggested, should use energy savers and tube lights instead of bulbs to save energy.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said Pesco office timings during Ramazan will be from Monday to Thursday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm while on Friday it will be from 8am to 12 noon. —Bureau Report

Child killed on road

PESHAWAR, Aug 1: A six-year-old child was killed when a speeding Suzuki pick-up hit him at Chamkani on Monday, police said. An official of the Chamkani police station said the child, Kamran, son of Maqabil Khan, an Afghan national, met the accident just after leaving his house. He was taken to the Lady Reading Hospital but could not survive.

The police arrested the accused driver Sajjad Hussain, resident of Kohatian No-II and impounded the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the police recovered a decomposed body of a young man which bore signs of several bullet injuries on head, ears and shoulders. The official said the body was beyond recognition and was shifted to the local mortuary for autopsy. —Bureau Report

Car-lifter arrested

KOHAT, Aug 1: The Punjab and Kohat police on Monday arrested the former Surgul UC nazim for steeling a taxi from Khushab district of Punjab.

Officials told Dawn the nazim, Gulzar Khan, had been nominated in a car theft case by owner Saifur Rehman and driver Bashir.

The residents of Mitha Dawan area of Khushab told police a couple rented the Corolla car on July 12 from Khushab city to Joharbabad. The couple gave tranquilisers to the driver and took away the car.

Saifur Rehman was told by somebody his car was in Kohat and to get it he should meet Gulzar Khan. He came to Kohat and met Gulzar who demanded Rs500,000 for recovery of car. After two days the car was found abandoned in Joharabad area of Khushab.

Saifur Rehman later filed a case against Gulzar for taking Rs500,000 from him and stealing his car. —Correspondent

Gender equity

PESHAWAR, Aug 1: The Individualland Pakistan and the Aurat Foundation, under USAID-supported Gender Equity Programme (GEP), are holding the second of a series of workshops in Peshawar from Aug 4 to 6.

The workshop will focus on sensitisation of media on gender equity in nine districts of Pakistan. Media personnel belonging to print, TV, radio and social media will participate in the sensitisation sessions.

Gulmina Bilal Ahmad and Tauseeq Haider will moderate the event while gender expert Dr Rakhshanda Parveen will act as resource person.

The discussions will also focus on the sensitivity of communicating women related issues through media and selection of appropriate messages. —Bureau Report

Ramazan packages

PESHAWAR, Aug 1: Ummah Welfare Trust will distribute 25,000 Ramazan food packages during the fasting month.

A statement issued here on Monday said packages would cost Rs85 million.

Of the packages, 15,000 packages will be distributed in Pakistan while the rest would be distributed in Azad Kashmir and Afghanistan. It was stated the trust had also planned to distribute such packages among the needy people in several other countries of Asia and Europe.

The packages contain flour, beans, ghee, sugar, rice, matches and other daily use items. Preparations to distribute the packages have been completed and responsibilities assigned to the volunteers. The trust’s chairman Mohammad Idrees said 4,000 flood affected people each in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Punjab would be benefited from the scheme. —Bureau Report

Community empowerment

CHITRAL, Aug 1: Devolution Trust for Community Empowerment (DTCE) has opened a desk in the district bar for providing free legal aid to the communities regarding local government projects.

At a function held here the other day, the director (press clubs and bar rooms) Dr Anwar Butt, project manager Farzana Shah and press officer Mushtaq Ahmed of the DTCE elaborated the importance of community empowerment in development process.They said the objective of devolution of power was aimed at empowering the poor masses to enable them to solve their problems on their own.

They said citizen community boards were important tools to gain the objective and DTCE had been established to strengthen the communities in the formation and activation of CCBs. —Correspondent

Thieves arrested

KOHAT, Aug 1: The police on Monday caught two thieves while taking away gas pipes in Shakardarra area.

The police said two locals identified as Tassawar Hussain and Talib Jan, residents of Shakardarra town, were taking away 13 pipes of the OGDCL in a pick-up.

The police intercepted them in the Janak mountains and impounded the vehicle with the stolen goods. —Correspondent
