Festive fire kills boy

HARIPUR, July 24: A boy was killed and three others were injured in a celebratory fire with Kalashnikovs by some youth at a wedding ceremony here in the early hours of Sunday.

Eyewitnesses and police said the incident occurred in Aramdara village of Ghazi tehsil.

The injured persons were taken to tehsil headquarters hospital Ghazi but one of the injured identified as Ansar Shah, 17, bled to death before any medical aid.

The injured Athar Shah, Mohammad Irfan and Mohammad Shehzad were shifted to Ayub Medical Complex Abbottabad in critical condition. The Ghazi police registered a criminal case against Mansoor Shah, Musawar Shah and Tasawar Shah.—Correspondent

Two held, arms seized

NOWSHERA, July 24: Police on Sunday arrested two smugglers and recovered huge cache of arms by thwarting a bid of smuggling arms.

On receiving a tip-off that a huge quantity of arms would be smuggled to Punjab from tribal area, DSP Cantonment Circle, Akhtar Ali Khan, directed increase in patrolling on the motorway to foil the bid.

Police intercepted a suspected passenger coach and upon search, recovered 18 rifles, four sten guns, four Kalashnikovs, 23 pistols and cartridges of different bores from its secret compartments. Police arrested two smugglers identified as Abdur Razzaq and Sheraz, residents of Mariam Zai.—APP

Boy shot dead

PESHAWAR, July 24: A boy was killed and his three brothers were injured when their rivals allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at them over a petty dispute in Nowshera district on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred at Dheri Mian Ishaq village where Akbar Khan's sons and his rival, Inayat Khan, exchanged hot words over construction of a street.

Police said the latter got infuriated and allegedly started firing at Akbar Khan's sons, killing Imran Khan instantly and critically wounding Said Wali, Ahmed Ali and Bahadar Khan. The police registered case against Inayat Khan and Amjad Ali.—APP

Prisoners escape

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, July 24: Taking advantage of the loadshedding, five prisoners escaped from the Dera central jail in the wee hours of Sunday.

Two of the escaped prisoners were arrested by the jail administration and police in the surrounding areas. The escaped prisoners were identified as Fazl Subhan, Islam, Mathoon, Riaz Ahmed and Taj Rehman.

The prisoners escaped from the back side of the building by cutting the fence. When the jail administration became aware of the escape, it alerted the police in the surrounding areas. Two of the prisoners, Fazl Subhan and Mathoon, were arrested.

Superintendent of the jail, Khalid Abbas Khan, suspended 10 officials for negligence of duty and ordered inquiry against them.—Correspondent

Death condoled

PESHAWAR, July 24: The Governor Barrister Masood Kausar has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the sad demise of the mother of Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi who breathed her last the other day.

While expressing his heartfelt sympathies with Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi and other members of the bereaved family, Barrister Kausar said, “In this hour of grief, he fully shares their feelings and prays for the courage and patience to them to bear the irreparable loss”. “May Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal peace”, according to hand out.—Bureau Report

Hashish seized

KOHAT, July 24: The Kohat police on Sunday seized huge quantity of hashish being smuggled from the tribal area to down country on the Indus Highway and arrested three inter-provincial carriers. Acting on a tip-off the police started checking vehicles near the Kohat Tunnel toll plaza. The police stopped a suspicious Toyota Hiace number C-8285 and recovered high quality hashish weighing 70 kilograms from secret cavities of the vehicle.

The police impounded the vehicle and arrested Jannat Khan, Hamza and Lal Sakhi, residents of Bara, Khyber Agency.

The police registered case against the accused who reportedly admitted during preliminary investigations that the consignment was booked from Darra Adamkhel. They also disclosed the names of the purchaser and the drug dealer to the police.—Correspondent

Cricket tournament

LANDI KOTAL, July 24: Khyber green team won the first governor gold cup T-20 tournament by beating Bajaur green team in the final match by six wickets. The match was played at the Jamrud sports complex.

Bajaur Green batted first and set a target of 94 at the loss of three wickets in 19 overs.

Khyber Green achieved the target by losing four wickets with two overs to spare.

Sami Afridi of Khyber Green was declared man of the match while Wilayat Khan of Bajaur earned the title of man of the tournament for his all-round performance.

Some twelve teams from across the Fata participated in the week-long tournament.—Correspondent

Items’ rates fixed

ABBOTTABAD July 24: The price review committee on Sunday fixed the rates of food items for the upcoming month of Ramazan at a meeting chaired by DCO Syed Zaheer-ul-Islam. The DCO directed strict implementation of the new rates.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of traders and officials of food department and local administration. Rates of meat, mutton, sweets and other items were fixed at the meeting. Mr Islam warned the traders not to charge higher rates other than fixed by the district administration otherwise they would be fined heavily and sent behind bars.—Correspondent

Entrance test

PESHAWAR, July 24: The result of the entrance test for admission into the government medical and dental colleges will be announced on Tuesday.

A total of 15,141, including 7,822 male and 7,319 females, appeared in the entrance test held at the Army Stadium, Peshawar and Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, according to a press release issued by the Khyber Medical University on Sunday. The test was conducted by the Education Testing and Evaluation Authority (ETEA).

The results can be seen on the website of the KMU www.kmu.edu.pk and ETEA www.etea.edu.pk. The students are competing for seats approved by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council in the public sector medical and dental colleges of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.—Bureau Report
