Man shot dead

MANSEHRA, June 18: A man was shot dead in broad daylight over an old enmity here on Saturday, police said.

Iqbal Khan, lodging FIR with the city police, said he and his younger brother, Mohammad Shahzad, were fired upon by Mohammad Jamshed, his brother, Yasir, and their accomplices, in Zafar bazaar, as a result Shahzad received bullet injuries and died on the spot.

Iqbal Khan said he and his brother were attacked while on way back to Kangar Paen after meeting their brother, Alamzab, in Chakriali area. Dispute over a marriage was stated to be the reason behind the murder. The city police launched efforts to apprehend the culprits who fled the scene after the incident. —Correspondent

Demo against outages

NOWSHERA, June 18: Hundreds of irate power consumers on Saturday staged a protest demonstration against the Pesco for unannounced power breakdowns in the district.

The residents of Par Jehangira gathered at Jehangira Chowk, carrying placards inscribed with anti-Wapda and government slogans.

They set a week-long deadline for the Pesco “to mend their way” otherwise, they threatened to block the GT Road.

“We will not only block the GT Road, but will also storm the Wapda offices if our demands are not paid proper heed,” they threatened.

The protesters urged the concerned Pesco executive engineer to get the old equipment at Jehangira grid station repaired to ensure uninterrupted power supply. —Correspondent

Probe sought

SWABI, June 18: The district and sessions judge on Saturday nominated judicial magistrate, Sher Aziz Khan, as investigation officer, to probe the alleged murder of a girl for honour. The investigation is expected to start on Monday, said an official.

Earlier, the Topi police submitted an application to the district and sessions judge seeking investigation into the alleged ‘honour killing’ of Maira, 14, who died after being allegedly subjected to electric shocks by her family members on June 9. She was alleged to have illicit relations with a relative.

Legal experts opine that the body of the girl would be exhumed to know how she was killed. Meanwhile, the police arrested the brother of the girl. —Correspondent

Anti-polio drive

KOHAT, June 18: The commissioner Kohat on Saturday launched a three-day anti-polio campaign by administering drops to a child in women and children hospital.

The medical superintendent of KDA hospital, Dr Imran, executive district officer, health, Dr Shad Ali Khattak, deputy medical superintendent of women and children hospital, Dr Hussain Jan, Dr Bilqias Khan Khattak and others were present on the occasion. The campaign would start from Monday.

The commissioner, Sahibazada Mohammad Anees, was told that 140,000 children would be administered polio drops by 252 mobile teams.

Meanwhile, the district price control magistrate on Saturday raided several shops on jail road and Teerah bazaar and collected fine of Rs14,200 from 21 shopkeepers for overcharging. —Correspondent

Driver killed

HARIPUR, June 18: An armed man shot dead a truck driver over a minor dispute of not giving him the space to overtake in the jurisdiction of Saddar police station on Saturday.

Police quoted Mohammad Sajjad, son of Haider Zaman of village Pind Hasham Khan, as saying his brother, Pervez, 24, was driving a loaded truck which was on way to village Ban Seri when a man who was later identified as Shamim Khan traveling by his jeep No ID 2037 stopped their truck and accused them of not giving him space to overtake.

The accused later opened fire at Pervez with his pistol injuring him seriously. The injured was shifted to Women and Children Hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead. Police said the accused was also injured when the brother of the deceased threw bricks at him. —Correspondent

Accused not arrested

PESHAWAR, June 18: Azhar Haroon, a resident of Lahori Gate, Peshawar has accused Kotwali police of not arresting a man who had allegedly shot at him.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar press club on Saturday, the complainant said he had borrowed Rs0.3 million from a woman for arranging his son’s marriage, but could not repay it on time and as result her husband opened fire on him.

“I paid the money with monthly interest but with a delay of only two months but the woman demanded extra interest,” he said, adding, when he refused to pay the extra money her husband, Babar Hussain Shah, and some other people shot at him. He said he was injured but police did not arrest the accused. —Bureau Report
