Robbers strike at five places

RAWALPINDI, May 12: Robbers struck at five places in the city and looted cash and other valuables, police said on Thursday.

Sohail Akhtar was travelling in a car along with his family when two gunmen riding a motorcycle intercepted them and snatched gold ornaments, Rs7,000 cash and a cellphone from his wife.

Qadeer Sharif was returning home with his family when two gunmen intercepted them at Hospital Road in Saddar and snatched Rs8,000 and gold ornaments weighing 20 tola from his wife. The value of the gold ornaments was estimated at Rs900,000.

Four gunmen entered a shop at Misryal Road and held the owner and his staff hostage. The gunmen snatched Rs35,000 cash and 17 cellphones from them and escaped.

Syed Nazir Ahmed, a resident of Officers Colony in Wah Cantonment told the police that two persons riding a car pointed their guns at his wife and snatched gold ornaments from her. Babar Hussain lodged a similar complaint with the Kotli Sattian police stating that he was returning home when two gunmen deprived him of Rs1,300 cash and a cellphone.—Staff Reporter

Fulbright scholarships

ISLAMABAD, May 12: The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) on Thursday extended the application receiving deadline for 2012 Fulbright Masters and PhD scholarships till June 15.

The announcement to this effect was made by USEFP Executive Director Ms. Rita Akhtar at a briefing held at the USEFP offices. While speaking on the occasion, she said that earlier the last date for receiving the applications for 2012 Fulbright Masters and PhD scholarships was May 18 and now, the USEFP was extending the date till June 15 to accommodate more students. —A Reporter

Mini-dam planned

ATTOCK, May 12: A mini-dam will be constructed in Jand tehsil at a cost of Rs8 million to meet the water requirement of the area for the next 30 years.

This was stated by DCO Attock Shakil Ahmed while briefing media at a site where a Daanish school is being built in Jand. The DCO said a Rs23 million water supply scheme with the storage capacity of 100,000 gallons was also underway to meet the water requirement of Daanish school. The school in Rakhmari village will cost Rs275.15 million. He said the project would be completed in November and educational activities are expected to begin from February 2012. He also highlighted the key points of the educational project and said it would boost the educational graph in this remote area of the district.

The DCO said the project included two schools, one each for girls and boys, covering an area of 200 acres. It consists of two main phases. The phase-1 envisages primary schools for both boys and girls and in the second phase, high schools for boys and girls would be constructed.—Correspondent
