TOBA TEK SINGH, March 9: An assistant superintendent of the district jail and his five accomplices were arrested for drug-trafficking here on Tuesday night.

Reports said a police party led by ASP Amjad Sheikh arrested the six accused after raiding their houses in the residential colony of the district jail on an information provided by Jail Superintendent Ahmad Naveed Gondal.

Those arrested were identified as assistant superintendent Waqar Alvi, Kamalia check-post van driver (constable) Muhammad Asif Iqbal and four accomplices Malik Abdul Ghaffar of Muhammadpura, Muhammad Latif of Chak 359-GB, Sanaullah of Chak 435-JB and Hasan Mujtaba of Chak 331-JB (Athwal).

The police also recovered a big quantity of heroin and hashish from their possession.

Sources said the accused were not only supplying narcotics to addicts in the district jail but were also selling it in different towns of the district.

Jail Superintendent Naveed Gondal claimed that he had no information regarding supplying of narcotics inside the jail.

However, he said he had received complaints about the involvement of Waqar Alvi in the narcotic business.

The police have registered a case against all the accused under Section 9-C of the Control of Narcotic Substances Act.

SHOT DEAD: A woman was shot dead and her husband injured critically on resistance by bandits in Chak 269-GB in Rajana area on Tuesday night.

Police said four dacoits entered the house of Ghulam Muhammad and held him and his wife hostage. On resistance, they fired at them killing Nazira Bibi instantly and injuring her husband seriously.

The injured man was admitted to DHQ Hospital in a critical condition.

DPO Ahsan Younis told reporters a police party, led by ASP Amjad Sheikh, chased the dacoits and arrested all of them. However, he did not disclose their identity.

KILLED: A farmer was shot dead and another was injured by assailants over an old enmity in Chak 49-GB on Wednesday.

Reports said Abdul Hameed was on the way to his farmland when opponents Abdul Shakoor and Mapal Khan intercepted him and injured him with a gunshot fire.

He was shifted to Allied Hospital in Faisalabad where he died.

The fleeing assailants also shot at and injured Nazir Ahmad when he tried to catch them.

BAR STRIKE: District Bar Association members observed a complete strike on Wednesday to condemn the killing of innocent citizens in the Faisalabad blast on Tuesday.

Bar members at a meeting held here on Wednesday demanded early arrest of all those who were backing terrorist activities in the country.

Fateha was also offered for those killed in the suicide attack.
