KARACHI, March 2: A young Pesh Imam (prayer leader) was gunned down in a Surjani Town mosque on Wednesday, police said.

They said that Abdul Razzaq, in his mid-20s, sustained two bullets and died on the spot. His body was later shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico legal formalities.

“He was the Pesh Imam at the Masjid-o-Madressah Faizan-i-Kabeer, located in Sector 36-A of Surjani Town,” said Inspector Mudassir Rafiq, the SHO of Surjani Town police station. “Two men on a motorbike stopped outside the mosque and rushed into it. They ran towards Abdul Razzaq, who was having a chat with some visitors, and one of them pulled out a pistol and fired shots at him.”

The victim was hit by bullets in the head and chest and died on the spot while the attackers fled the scene in a flash, he said, adding that the armed men did not take away anything from anyone present in the mosque.

“It's not the robbery or mugging attempt. It seems to be a premeditated murder as the attackers did not harm any of more than a dozen people who were in the mosque at that time. An initial probe suggests that the victim had a dispute with some people and the incident seems to be a result of the same feud,” said the SHO.

Two women killed A man allegedly gunned down his young wife and his teenage sister inside their New Karachi house on Wednesday before running away, police said.

They said that Ghulam Akbar tied the knot with 22-year-old Shabina some eight months ago and was living with his parents in Sector 7-A of Bilal Colony in New Karachi Town within the remit of the Sir Syed police station.

The reason behind the double murder remained unclear.

“The incident occurred in the first half of the day,” said DSP Altaf Hussain, the area's supervisory police officer (SPO).

“The family told police said that the suspect had an argument with his wife in the morning that turned into a heated debate which left him quite angry.”

He said that Ghulam Akbar took out a pistol and fired at his wife who sustained two bullet wounds — each in the chest and the abdomen.

However, during the process, 15-year-old younger sister of the suspect, Gul Akhtar, tried to intervene and got wounded. She received a gunshot in the head, the police officer said.

“There were only female members of the family at home at the time of the incident. The suspect left the house after firing, leaving the two wounded women in a pool of blood,” he added.

He said that Gul Akhtar died on the spot while Shabina succumbed to her wounds during treatment at the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

The bodies were handed over to the family after medico-legal formalities.

“The family claims that Ghulam Akbar has been suffering from some serious mental disorder for the last several years. He had a history of violent disputes with other family members,” said DSP Hussain.

He said that the family originally hailed from Mardan and the suspect ran a roadside food stall near his residential area with his father and brothers.

“The family is aggrieved and shocked over the dual murder. And an FIR will be registered after the funerals,” he added.

Man shot dead A young man was shot dead in Gulshan-i-Iqbal while he was on his way home on his motorbike, the police said.

They said that Syed Ehtasham was found lying on the main road near Gulshan Chowrangi along with his motorbike with a single bullet wound in the chest.

“There is no eyewitness to the incident as such,” said SSP Naeem Sheikh of Gulshan Town. “The victim was found lying on the road with his cash and cellphone intact which suggests that it was not a mugging attempt. The reason behind the killing is not clear.”

Father of two, the victim was a resident of Five Star Complex in Gulshan-i-Iqbal and was employed with a private bank.

The SSP said that though the family of the victim denied his any political association, a few area people said that he used to sit with political activists in the area.
