15pc hike in train fares this week

ISLAMABAD, July 3: The Pakistan Railways has forwarded a summary to the Ministry of Railways for increasing fares from 5 to 15 per cent to cope with mounting expenses because of unprecedented hike in prices of petroleum products.

“We are likely to increase fares by 15 per cent,” an official of the railways told APP here on Thursday.

A five per cent increase has been proposed in fares of freight trains and non-air conditioned/economy class seats, and a 15 per cent increase in AC/Sleeper and Lower AC fares. A 10 per cent increase has been proposed in parcel charges. New fares would take effect this week.—APP
