KARACHI, July 3: The World Wildlife Fund’s staff has rescued a dolphin from a fisherman in Keti Bunder, a coastal town in Thatta district, and released it into the sea.

According to a press release, on June 6, WWF staff at Keti Bunder office was informed that a Humpback dolphin had been caught by a local fisherman who wanted to sell it to fishermen involved in crab business who used its meat as bait.

Zahid Hussain Jalbani, manager, WWF site office, Keti Bunder, with his team members asked the fisherman to release the dolphin into sea. However, he was adamant not to releasing it with the contention that it had damaged his fishing net. He also argued that the dolphins caused difficulties in their fishing activities.

The WWF team persuaded the fisherman to release the dolphin into the sea after having detailed dialogues. Nadeem Sheikh, community mobiliser, talked to fisherman about the ban on hunting and harming dolphins.

Finally, the dolphin was released into the sea.

WWF-Pakistan is currently working on a project named Cetacean Conservation Project for conservation of whales and dolphins of Pakistan. Under this project, comprehensive surveys have been held along the coast of Sindh and Balochistan.—APP
