SUKKUR: Town entry tax ignites protest
By Our Correspondent
SUKKUR, July 3: Hundreds of van and wagon drivers staged a demonstration and sit-in at Rohri on Thursday against the imposition of town entry tax by the taluka municipal council. This was their second day of protest.
Hundreds of van and wagon drivers stopped plying their vehicles between Sukkur and Rohri road and parked them at Beri chowk in Rohri.
They shouted slogans against the taluka municipal administration. The drivers also burnt tyres and blocked the road for several hours.
They told journalists that they were already facing problems due to the rise in fuel prices. They added that the taluka municipal administration had imposed Rs10 tax per van and Rs20 tax per wagon for per trip which was unjust. They said they will not pay this tax.
After the blockade of the road a contingent of police reached there. The Rohri SHO Jawed Alam Abro talked with the protesters and asked them to end the blockade of the road. The drivers ended the blockade and transport between Sukkur and Rohri resumed.
Rohri taluka nazim Aslam Shaikh said suggestions regarding the imposition of tax were invited before the announcement of the taluka budget. And no one had raised any objection at that time, he said.
