KARACHI, June 27: The opening day one of the three-day National Judo Championship, being organised by the Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF), saw Pakistan Railways bag the highest number of gold medals in the sparring matches judged in four weight categories.
Railways’ Gulzar Ahmed (under-56kg) and Zahid Iqbal (open weight) both won gold medals in the respective categories while Army’s Mushtaq Ahmed and Wapda’s Ayatullah picked up the gold in the under-50kg and under-66kg categories, respectively.
Earlier, the championship featuring 10 teams, namely, Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, NWFP, FATA, Islamabad, Army, Wapda, Railways and Police was inaugurated by Qazi Asad, NWFP’s higher education minister, who was also the chief guest on the occasion.
Results:
Under-50kg: Gold — Mushtaq Ahmed (Army), Silver — Mohammad Sadiq (Wapda), Bronze — Azhar Ahmed (Railways) and Mohammad Idrees (Punjab).
Under-56kg: Gold — Gulzar Ahmed (Railways), Silver — Shareef Masih (Wapda), Bronze — Mudassar Ali (Army) and Muhammad Fareed (Balochistan).
Under-66kg: Gold — Ayatullah (Wapda), Silver — Munawar Ahmed (Army), Bronze — Asghar (Police) and Naimat (Balochistan).
Open weight: Gold — Zahid Iqbal (Railways), Silver — Mohammad Yousuf (Punjab), Bronze — Naveed Akbar (Army) and Shahid (Sindh).
