Majid nominated for ICC post

By Our Sports Reporter

LAHORE, May 9: Former Pakistan Test captain Majid Khan has been nominated as a candidate for the post of International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Cricket Committee chairman, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Dr Nasim Ashraf said on Friday.

The position fell vacant after the former Indian Test captain Sunil Gavaskar opted to resign from the committee to concentrate on his media assignments.

It is the second time that the 61-year-old Majid, former chief executive of the PCB and a veteran of 63 Tests, has been recommended for this post, the first time being during Shaharyar Khan’s tenure when Gavaskar had completed his first three-year term.

But the ICC had later changed its format, giving Gavaskar another extension.

However, recently the ICC — after raising the objection over Gavaskar’s second role as a writer and commentator —asked him to opt for one field.

Gavaskar preferred to leave the international body to continue his career as commentator.

Meanwhile, the PCB got Majid’s consent before recommending his name.

If the case of another ICC-affiliated unit’s sending in its nomination, the ICC executive committee will have to choose one person for the post.
