UN plans summit on food crisis

By Our Correspondent

UNITED NATIONS, April 18: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon is expected to convene a meeting of world leaders to address the issue of skyrocketing food prices which threaten to undermine political stability and create a turmoil in capital markets, a spokesperson of the United Nations said.

When asked at a Thursday press briefing whether the UN chief was considering holding a summit of world leaders like the one on climate change to tackle the food shortage, spokesperson Michele Montes said: “He is doing exactly that.”

Since early this year, United Nations agencies like the World Food Programming and Food and Agriculture Organisation have issued dire warnings of food shortages worldwide, and its impact on the world economic order.
