Cancellation of flights causes disruption at US airports

By Masood Haider

NEW YORK, April 9: A chaos-like situation prevailed over the US airline industry on Wednesday as the American Airlines cancelled 850 more flights to re-inspect the wiring on its MD-80 jets, as per the requirements of the Federal Aviation Authority.

The flight cancellations caused disruptions at all airports in the US. The largest carrier in the United States had cancelled 500 flights on Tuesday.

In a statement, American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said that 208 of the flights cancelled on Wednesday involved the carrier’s main hub at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

It was the second wave of cancellations by the airline over the issue of wiring. American Airlines is inspecting — and if necessary — reworking the wiring bundles on its MD-80 aircraft to comply with federal safety rules.

Thousands of passengers were seen stranded at all the three New York airports — namely, the JFK, La Guardia and Newark — as seats on other airlines were hard to come by. The American Airlines alone operates about 2,300 flights daily.
