Power crisis to persist for two years: Pepco

ISLAMABAD, April 6: Despite Wapda’s plans to increase its power generation capacity, loadshedding would continue for at least two years, Director-General of the Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) Tahir Basharat Cheema said on Sunday.

He told DawnNews TV channel that the intensity of loadshedding would be less next year because Pepco would add 2,200 megawatts of power to the system this year.

According to him, 15 independent power producers (IPPs) will start their projects late this year. “By 2010, they will add 2,868MW of power.”

He said public sector had only recently been asked to bridge the gap between demand and supply, adding that under the previous policy, only private sector was allowed to increase generation capacity.—APP
