Shabbir shines as seven favourites oblige punters

By Anwar Zuberi

KARACHI, April 6: Quadruple by jockey Ghulam Shabbir II including a hat-trick, magnificent double by father and son apiece so does by two trainers were some of the highs in the Gymkhana race meeting at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Champion Rider Shabbir opened his campaign in the third race when public fancy mare Blind Date registered her fourth win on the trot posting a facile six length’s victory over Mushki.

The rider had the previous three victories of Blind Date under his belt.

In the next, he piloted home four-year-old bay filly Midnight Furry to a convincing four length’s victory over colt Sayeen Jee.

He completed treble when he steered public fancy filly Diamond In Dust to a scintillating 11 lengths victory over colt Tube Jee in the fifth.

He finally ended the day on an impressive note presenting owner Shah Mardan Shah with a winner through mare Abhi Abhi who eased to nine lengths win over Discreet Cat in the seventh race, also a feature event.

But it was rider Arshad who landed The Popular Group Of Industries Cup when filly The Victorious made it two-in-a-row outpacing Vice Admiral by three-and-a-half lengths.

Lion Of Arab and Arab Hi Arab completed the frame among eleven runners.

Favourite 13-year-old bay mare Sonia repeated her winning feat in the second while another favourite filly Moon Baby made amends to claim the concluding race.

Earlier, Lateef powered second favourite Dr Dang to an impressive six-and-a-half lengths victory over mare Marista in the opener. He belongs to the stables of KRC chairman, Syed Sadruddin Shah Rashdi, and saddled by Ehtisham. The owner-trainer combination completed double through Blind Date in the third race.

Sadruddin’s son Ismail Shah also shared the honours through back-to-back triumphs of Midnight Furry and Diamond In Dust. Both were partnered by Rafik K.

Jockey M. Nasir was suspended for two weeks in addition to Rs10,000 fine on charges of dangerous riding on Vice Admiral in the sixth race. Similarly, rider Mohsin Mohiuddin was slapped with a two-week suspension and fine of Rs5,000 for dangerous riding on Muktadar in the second.

Yet another rider Ashiq Ali was warned off for not allowing Savabeel run on merit in the seventh race.

Meanwhile, Dawn continued to command respect in the eyes of racegoers for the second consecutive week when it’s all but one tips returned with flying colours.

In a card of eight races, seven, including the day’s best and good double, proved their mettle and obliged punters with fluent wins.

The winners include Sonia, Blind Date, Midnight Furry, Diamond In Dust, The Victorious, Abhi Abhi and Moon Baby.

The only exception was in the opener where second best Dr Dang overcame Royal Loyalty.

It is pertinent to mention that Dawn achieved a rare feat when all its tips (seven) claimed honours last weekend.
