No-trust brewing against Faisalabad naib nazim

By Mohammad Saleem

FAISALABAD, March 31: The PML-Q backed city district naib nazim is likely to face a no-confidence move brewing in the house soon after the members-elect of the Punjab Assembly will be sworn in on April 9, sources say.

Sources said the likely no-confidence motion against Mian Amjad Yasin is being supported by the house members belonging to the PPP, PML-N and some of the disgruntled elements in the former ruling party as well.

The rebel members of the house reportedly conducted nearly ten meetings to win over the like-minded colleagues, including women representatives, against Mr Yasin, the sources said, adding the efforts in this regard were continuing.

According to the sources, the rebel group believed Mr Yasin had been running the house arbitrarily and in violation of the set rules.

He is also accused of suppressing the voices of dissent raised against the `illegal actions’ of the ruling party members.

A union council nazim, Tahir Rasheed, told Dawn that absence of the mandatory monitoring committees in the district was a glaring example of the authoritarian behaviour of the custodian of the house.

The election for 36 committees was put on hold in March last year, after the protest by the UC nazims and house members over alleged wrongdoings of Mr Yasin who was also election commissioner.

He was accused of trying to get his favourite nazims elected.

Sensing the gravity of situation, the convener had postponed the election for 36 monitoring committees which were still not in sight even after passage of a year.

Mr Rasheed said the consent of 207 house members was required to oust the naib nazim, claiming that about 300 were ready to support the move.

The city district council houses 413 members including union council nazims and members elected on special seats.

The sources said the disgruntled members did not plan to oust the city district nazim Rana Zahid Touseef, however, he could meet a similar fate if he extended help to the naib zila nazim.

On the other hand, Mr Yasin said charges being leveled against him were baseless as he did nothing wrong. He said he would apprise media of hidden agenda of `some unscrupulous’ elements of the house at a press conference.
