MUZAFFARABAD, Jan 29: A cyber crime control unit will be established in Azad Jammu and Kashmir to track down sophisticated crimes, the region’s new police chief announced here on Tuesday.

However, Inspector General Javed Noor did not give any timeframe as to when the announcement would be realised.

“It’s in my basic priorities and will start working as early as is possible for us,” he said at his maiden press conference two days after assuming the office.

The IGP said he had found the officers of AJK police fully conversant with information technology and hence capable of running such a unit.

The unit would help arrest specific crimes dealing with computers and networks and the facilitation of traditional crime through the use of computers, said Mr Noor, who took the credit of setting up this unit in the Punjab way back in 2000 with the help of an international bank.

To a question regarding tracking down calls from unregistered SIM cards, he said although the mobile phone was the most common device being used in almost all crimes, yet a system to track down anonymous callers was very expensive and in the possession of intelligence agencies only.

“Even the Punjab police are also banking upon the agencies and we can also do the same,” he said, adding coordination with the agencies possessing this facility would be enhanced to nab the criminals.

Spelling out his priorities, he said he would make the AJK police a force which was not only professional and service oriented but also accountable to the people.

He said he would welcome external accountability instead of taking it as interference or undue criticism.

“We won’t mind that who is watching and commenting about us. We will take positive criticism in the positive sense,” he said.

Saying that training of policemen was something close to his heart, Mr Noor vowed that he would also lay full emphasis on training.

The IGP also announced that he would ensure security of tenure of police officers and unless there was a complaint against any officer premature transfer would not be made.

He said revival of infrastructure of police department would also be his priority.

To a question, he said he would also try his level best to get a raise in the salaries of police constables and head constables in accordance with the resources of the state.
