SIALKOT, Jan 28: A labourer, Muhammad Akbar, was electrocuted to death when he touched a live wire at a flour grinding machine in Libey Badiana, Pasrur, on Sunday night. It is believed that he was trying to break into the unit to steal flour. He is survived by his eight children and a wife.
The family of Akbar says that they had been hungry for the last three days because of non-availability of flour. On Sunday, Akbar, begged flour from different places but failed get anything. At night, he planned to break into the flour grind unit in his village. While stealing the flour, he touched a live wire there and died. Akbar was laid to rest in the presence of the hundreds of the mourners from all walks of life.
EUROPEAN UNION: A European Union (EU) delegation visited Sialkot amid tight security. The observers met Sialkot District Returning Officer (DRO) Suhaib Ahmad Roomi and discussed various issues relating to the Feb 18 elections.
Mr Roomi briefed the observers about the arrangements by the Election Commission to hold the elections.
The visitors also met candidates of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and listened to their complaints about pre-poll rigging by the government and police to support PML-Q candidates.
The delegation consisted of Vygands Aleksandravicius, Injrid Halmova and Zahid Mahmood. They said only free and fair elections in Pakistan could establish sustainable democracy and promote real democratic norms and values in Pakistan. The observers said the EU was monitoring the elections in Sialkot as the thrilling contests were likely in almost all constituencies. It was the second visit of the EU observers as they had visited the district three days ago.
