PESHAWAR, Jan 12: Police rounded up over 100 Afghan refugees and 280 pillion riders on Saturday.

It was observed that the traffic police had been concentrating more on stopping pillion riders than managing the traffic. Traffic came to a standstill in Saddar, Islamia Road, Saddar Road, Saddar Stadium Chowk, and near Sunehri Masjid.

SP traffic Jaafer Khan told Dawn that by Saturday afternoon 280 motorists had been fined for violating rules and said the campaign would continue.

Meanwhile, a police official said the Afghan refugees were found roaming near the route of a Muharram procession and were taken into custody by security agencies.

“It would be difficult for police to control them as they are residing in several localities of the city,” he said.
