ISLAMABAD, Dec 23: A left wing political organisation has vowed that the ongoing movement for democracy will not be allowed to get derailed. “The movement aimed at not to change faces but to transform Pakistan into a welfare state”, said a statement issued by the People’s Rights Movement (PRM) here on Sunday.
The PRM statement said the upcoming elections would not dampen the movement which started on March 9 and would be carried forward even for years if need be. It pointed out that for 60 years the establishment exploited the people under the pretext of ‘national security’ and the present movement marked a big change in politics as the demand was not just for an end to the Musharraf dictatorship but to ending, once and for all, the monopoly of the military executive over state affairs.
The statement said Pakistan had become an American colony and the struggle of lawyers, journalists, students and political workers was nothing less than a war of national liberation against American imperialism and its client ruling class in Pakistan.
The PRM hoped that sooner or later the working class would join the struggle as it was now subject to unprecedented price hike, rising unemployment and deteriorating social indicators.—Our Reporter
