Ex-PM held responsible for wheat crisis

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, Dec 14: Senator Ilyas Ahmad Bilour has held former prime minister Shaukat Aziz and his economic managers responsible for the current wheat flour crises in the country.

In a statement issued here on Friday, Mr Bilour alleged that the former prime minister’s ‘lopsided’ economic policies created the crisis.

He said that Mr Aziz had allowed the export of 400,000 metric tonnes of wheat at the rate of US $235 per metric ton without considering the repercussions on the domestic market.

The export created the shortage of wheat, he said.

Mr Bilour said that due to the shortage, the incumbent government was importing wheat at the rate of US $440 per metric ton.

The senator called for a probe into the crisis and said that the people responsible for it should be taken to task.
