KARACHI: British envoy meets JI leaders

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Nov 14: British Deputy High Commissioner Hamesh Daniel met Jamaat-i-Islami leaders at Idara Noor-i-Haq on Wednesday and inquired about details of detained leaders of the party.

JI Deputy Chief Prof Ghafoor Ahmad said more than 50 party leaders and workers had been arrested in Karachi alone so far. He said lifting of emergency would be meaningless until Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry and other deposed judges were reinstated and the curbs on the media were removed.

He expressed gratitude to the Commonwealth, British prime minister and foreign minister on their statements against imposition of emergency and call for restoration of constitution in the country.

The diplomat assured the JI leaders that he would convey their sentiments to the authorities in the UK.

Maulana Asadullah Bhutto, Niamatullah Khan, Dr Mairajul Huda Siddiqui, Rafique Shaikh and Hafiz Naeemuddin were also present.
