Bid to hand over girl in Swara foiled

By Our Correspondent

TIMERGARA, Aug 28: Police on Tuesday intervened to save a three-year-old girl from becoming victim of the inhuman custom of Swara by taking an undertaking from her father that he would not hand her over to his rivals.

The girl’s father, Pervez Khan, was produced before a local court where he gave the undertaking.

Police warned the family that strict legal action would be taken against them if the girl was given in Swara to the rival family.

Following the police intervention and publication of news reports about the decision to hand over the girl on August 31, the other family has now informed Pervez Khan that they would not visit their residence in Chakdara and would set another date for taking away the girl.

DPO Khursheed Khan had taken notice of the issue and formed a special police team which raided the house of Pervez Khan.

The issue surfaced a few days ago when an Afghan family in Punjab charged Pervez with having illicit relations with the wife of one of their business partners.
