Accused in jirga case arrested

By Our Correspondent

JACOBABAD, Aug 20: Ghulam Sarwar Banglani, one of the accused in the case involving a jirga which ordered the marriage of five minor girls as compensation for a murder, was arrested on Monday from the Kamal Magsi village in Tangwani taluka of Kandhkot-Kashmore district.

A police contingent, led by SPO of Tangwani taluka Abdul Khaliq Waggan, conducted raids in Karampur, Arsalan Banglani, Dadan Khan Nandwani and other villagers but could lay hands only on Ghulam Sarwar.

Referring to other accused in the case, including People’s Party Parliamentarians MNA Mir Hazar Khan Bijarani, the SPO told Dawn that they had gone into hiding.

However, he said that raids were continuing and expressed the hope that they would be arrested before September 3 when the Supreme Court would take up the case.

Meanwhile, Regional Police Officer Sukkur Mohammad Bachal Sangri told journalists that the orders of the apex court to arrest the jirga members would be complied with.
