HYDERABAD, Aug 20: A large number of relatives, and neighbours of one and a half year old boy who reportedly died due to excessive blood transfusion at the Shah Bhittai Hospital in Latifabad on Monday, staged a sit-in in the hospital, forcing the administration to seek police help.

The in-charge EDO of health, Dr. Sharif Rathore, who arrived at the hospital and talked to the boy’s parents immediately after the police reached there said an inquiry would be conducted into the causes that led to the boy’s death.

No doctor, however, has been placed under suspension by the district government’s health authorities.

Abdul Majeed, the boy’s paternal uncle, said that Rizwan, his younger brother Islamuddin’s son, died in the Civil Hospital in the evening when they rushed him there after his condition deteriorated due to excessive blood transfusion in Shah Bhittai Hospital.

The boy’s father, who deals in cloths, was unable to say anything because he was still in shock.

Mr Majeed said that the boy had been admitted four days ago when Dr. Shaheen Rizvi, a paediatrician at the Shah Bhittai Hospital, Latifabad, advised them after examining the boy at her private clinic.

The boy had complications in urine and suffered from anaemia. The paediatrician advised blood transfusion, which had to be stopped on Aug 17 when the boy’s condition deteriorated but they transfused half a pint more blood, which worsened his condition, he said and added that the boy was to be given 300cc of blood but instead he was given around 700cc of blood. Besides Dr. Shaheen Rizvi, he also held Dr. Rubi responsible for the death. They took the boy to a private hospital from Shah Bhittai hospital on Monday and then finally landed in Civil Hospital where the boy died in the evening despite best efforts by the doctors, he said.

Dr. Sharif Rathore said that the family took away the boy without intimating the hospital and he died in the Civil Hospital. As he was anaemic blood transfusion was necessary, he said, adding, that the boy was normal until Aug 19 after he was administered blood a day before.

He confirmed that no action had been taken against Dr. Shaheen Rizvi contending that she was the only paediatrician at the hospital and had to attend to crowds of patients everyday.
