WASHINGTON, June 11: The United States and Russia welcome Pakistan’s decision to become a partner nation of the global initiative to combat nuclear terrorism, the US State Department said on Monday.

In a statement issued in Washington, the State Department noted that Islamabad’s decision will help the global war against nuclear terrorism.

The programme, known as the Global Initiative to Combat Nuclear Terrorism, calls on states to improve accounting, control and physical protection of nuclear material and radioactive substances as well as the security of nuclear facilities.

It is a joint initiative launched by US President Bush and Russian President Putin.
