Badawi to wed Jeanne today

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said on Friday he is not nervous about his wedding which is set to take place in a private ceremony at his official residence.

Abdullah, a 67-year widower, will wed Jeanne Abdullah, the former manager of his residential complex, on Saturday.

“No, what is there to be nervous about?” Abdullah told reporters after attending an official ceremony.

But despite the denial, the prime minister may have been feeling some anxiety as he added, “I hope everything goes well.” Abdullah's remarriage comes almost two years after the death of his late wife Endon Mahmood in October 2005 from breast cancer. Her death triggered an outpouring of support and sympathy for Abdullah, as their 40-year marriage was widely considered a model relationship among Malaysians. Saturday's bride-to-be, Jeanne Abdullah, 53, is the former sister-in-law of Endon. She was married to Endon's younger brother but they have been divorced for some years, Abdullah told reporters on Wednesday after the official announcement.—AFP
