PESHAWAR, June 2: Tehrik-i-Istiqlal chief Rehmat Khan Wardak has suggested holding elections on the basis of proportional representation so that ordinary people can also have access to assemblies.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, he called for an increase in the seats of the Senate and National and provincial assemblies. He said an NA constituency should have no more than 200,000 voters while there should be 100,000 voters in each provincial assembly constituency.

The TI leader asked political parties to avoid activities that could pave the way for a martial law. He said political parties should start preparation for the coming elections instead of indulging in political adventurism so that the democratic process could continue uninterrupted.

He was of the view that previous martial laws were imposed in the country due to `blatant follies of politicians’ as they were engaged in uncalled for agitation and campaigns against the governments.—APP
