Tainted toothpaste

BEIJING, May 23: China said on Wednesday it was investigating reports that tainted toothpaste has been exported to Panama and the Dominican Republic, as one of the firms under scrutiny denied any wrongdoing.

“(We) pay serious attention to reports that toothpaste in Panama and the Dominican Republic contains diethylene glycol,” the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement.

Diethylene glycol is a potentially lethal industrial chemical.

The administration said joint teams from various government agencies were carrying out investigations in Beijing and in the east Chinese province of Jiangsu. —AFP
