Fazl rejects armed struggle in Pakistan

By Our Correspondent

QUETTA, May 3: Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that his party rejects armed struggle against the armed forces in the country and is determined to achieve rights for the people through peaceful means within the parameters of the Constitution.

He was speaking at a “martyrs’ conference”, organised by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) Quetta chapter here on Thursday. Maulana Fazl cautioned ulema and activists, who were raising slogans in favour of the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and said that an international conspiracy could be foiled through the constitutional struggle. He maintained that the armed struggle or violence in the country would help the US to implement its “agenda” to make geographical changes in the region.

He did not agree with a perception that the present tussle between the West and the Muslim world was a conflict of civilisations and said that Islam preached reforms of other civilisations instead of imposing one’s faith on others.

The MMA leader said: “We support the Mujahideen’s struggle in Afghanistan, the resistance movement in Iraq and the Palestinians’ struggle against Israel but that did not mean we should follow their way of struggle in Pakistan. Our struggle was constitutional, political and democratic.”

Maulana Fazl said that President Bush was facing problem in the US Congress and Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Labour Party facing problems owing to their wrong policies in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He said the United States has occupied Iraq and Afghanistan to capture the oil reserves in the Middle East and gas in Central Asian states. He said war on terror was aimed to protect imperialistic interest of the US.

He said that President Gen Pervez Musharraf and President Hamid Karzai being ally of the US in the war on terror publicly acknowledged that they did not trust each other and added that they were pursuing anti-people policies to appease Washington.

Maulana Fazl said the MMA did not oppose negotiations with the US to resolve Afghanistan, Palestine and Iraq issues but America had to accept the freedom of nations, democracy and fundamental rights, adding that use of sophisticated weapons could not suppress the movements backed by the people.

On the domestic front he said that new political lines were being drawn in the name of extremism and moderation to divide the people in the coming elections.
