Top seeds move into last eight

LAHORE, May 3: Davis Cupper, Nomi Qamar, along with Inam Gul, Tanveer Ashiq and Mehmood Khan also made it to the last eight in the men's singles event of the Pakistan Open tennis for Nazim Cup at Royal Palm Country Club on Thursday.

Nomi registered an overwhelming victory against Asif Feroz 6-3, 6-4.

He romped home like a champion as Asif failed to make significant resistance.

Inam Gul ,halted the march of ageing Rashid Malik in another one-sided match.

Rashid, a former national champion, Davis Cupper and Pakistan coach was seen struggling throughout the match. But it was Inam's day as he wrapped up the match with an easy win 6-2, 6-4.

Tanveer ousted Omer Babar 7-5, 6-4 in rather good match of the day. Tanvir broke Omer's service in the 11th game to win the first set. And in the next Tanveer again broke the service in the 8th game to end the 40-minute encounter.

Mehmood Khan, showed no mercy to Hameed Gul, before disposing off the challenge 6-1, 6-1.

Men's singles quarter-finals will be played on Friday.

In the boys U--17 event, Omer Babar, S. Abbas Raza, M. Abid and S. Zohair Raza marched into the semi-finals.

In the best match of this category, S. Zohair Raza was stretched to three sets to beat Waqas Malik.

Upcoming, youngster from Karachi Zohair, played an excellent game with strong lobs and passing shots. Though he lost the first set 4-6 but he bounced back winning the remaining two sets 6-4, 6-3 to seal the fate of the match.

Syed Zohair and M. Abid have also entered the Boys U-14 final, winning their semi-finals against Ahmed Babar and Hamza Pataudi, respectively.

Inam Gul bt Rashid Malik 6-2, 6-4; Tanveer Ashiq bt Omer Babar 7-5, 6-4;Nomi Qamar bt Asif Ferooz 6-3, 6-4; Mehmood Khan bt Hameed Gul 6-1, 6-1.

Men's doubles (quarter-finals):

Asim Shafik-Jalil Khan bt Munir Ashiq-Tanveer Ashiq 6-3, 6-3; Mehmood Khan-Inam Gul bt Inamulhaq-Omer Babar 6-3, 6-4; Nomi Qamar-M. Shafiq beat Abdullah Sheikh; Millan Tahir 6-1, 6-1; Aqeel Khan-Rashid Malik bt Shahzad- Capt Taimur 6-1, 6-0.

Boys Under-17 singles (quarter-finals):

Omer Babar bt Ahmed Ch. 6-1, 6-3; S. Abbas Raza bt Hamza Pataudi 6-1, 6-1; M. Abid bt Haidyat Ullah 7-5, 6-4; S. Zohair Raza bt Waqas Malik 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Boys Under-14 singles (semi-finals):

Syed Zohair Raza bt Ahmed Babar 6-1, 6-2; M. Abid bt Hamza Pataudi 6-1, 6-4.

Ladies singles (quarter-finals):

Sarah Mahboob bt Mehreen Izhar 6-3, 6-2; Sara Mansoor bt Nosheen Ihtesham 6-3, 7-5.
