Protest against Motorway Police

By Our Correspondent

GUJRANWALA, April 29: Scores of people blocked traffic on GT Road and broke windowpanes of Motorway Police office on Sunday at Lohianwal intersection against alleged torture of a rickshaw driver.

Reports said MP officials Sajjad and his colleague stopped motorcycle-rickshaw driver Irfan Haider and asked for vehicle’s documents. The police did not allow him to move even after he produced the papers.

The police beat him up when he offered resistance. As a result he fainted.

Later, scores of people staged a protest demonstration, blocked traffic and broke windowpanes of MP office. Irfan Haider, 22, told newsmen that he had gone to get permission for plying on the road, but both the officials demanded bribe from him. “They tortured me when I refused to give them money,” he said.

A heavy police contingent reached Lohianwal where the protesters were assured of departmental action against the accused officials.
