ISLAMABAD, April 27: French Ambassador Regis de Belenet said Friday that the world should join hands to effectively fight terrorism that was an extreme threat to the world community.
Speaking at a seminar organised by the Sir Syed Memorial Society, Mr Belenet said: “The war against terrorism is not against Islam or Muslims.”
According to him, use of force and military was not the only answer to terrorism and there was a need to find political solutions to the problems being confronted by the world.
Highlighting the importance of political solutions, the French envoy said political will was the most effective tool to ensure peace and security in the world.
If Germany and France can unite for the development, progress and prosperity of the humanity, then there is a possibility of unity among other nations of the world, he noted.
The French ambassador said use of nuclear technology for peaceful purposes was the right of every country, but before that signing of agreements like the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) must be ensured.
About the role of the United Nations, he said the UN was only an institution that had the trust of every country as it had always ensured observance of political and human rights the world over. However, he acknowledged that UN’s performance could not be termed perfect.
Speaking on the occasion, MNA M.P. Bhandara highlighted the issue of finding political solutions to the root causes of terrorism.
